Eighteen-year-old New York native Whitney Woerz is currently on the road as support for Jesse McCartney’s Resolution Tour. On Saturday she tackled a crowd of 1,500 fans in the City of Brotherly Love. Her set, upbeat and poppy, was sprinkled with encouraging words and reminders that no one in this world is truly alone in their struggles.

Whitney is a known ambassador for an organization called LETS Bring Change 2 Mind; a nonprofit that aims to start important conversations and end the stigma surrounding mental health. Whitney focuses on and incorporates this throughout her entire time with us. Spread across the floor of her stage setup was fifty mason jars, full of fairy lights, representing the 50,000 people who committed suicide in 2018.

Before the performance of her song “Ghost Story,” Whitney pauses her set to ask the crowd to pull out their phones and turn their flashlights on. She wants to prove just how common mental health issues are. Hold up your light if you’ve ever struggled with anxiety or depression. Nearly the entire room lights up. Hold your light up if you’ve ever known someone who has struggled with anxiety or depression or suicidal thoughts. More lights go up.

You can look around and see the faces of every single person around you. One more time, hold your lights up if you or anyone you know has ever struggled with anything mental health related and you’ve been afraid or unsure of how to get help. It was a powerful moment and definitely strikes the realization that these conversations are so important. The emotional energy from Whitney radiated from the stage and was felt by every single person in the room.

It’s inspiring and heartwarming to witness this new wave of musicians who are using their voices and platforms to speak out regarding important issues. The only way to beat the stigma is to talk about it and guide those around you through the conversation.

Check out Whitney Woerz on tour with Jesse McCartney until February 13th and listen to her newest single “LOVE ME NOT.”
