Gorillaz – The Met – Philadelphia, PA – October 14, 2022

A mix of art and music, Gorillaz is a band that transcends time itself being one of the most well-known groups of its time. Last Friday, they hit the stage at The Met Philly to a packed house of doting fans. To my and everyone else’s amazement, from the beginning to the end of the performance, the stage was lit with color and bold visuals. Animations, storyboard animations, gorgeous stills and above all, incredible editing to bring it all together perfectly. The pure amount of thought and creativity that went into each song’s presentation honored both the collaborators and characters alike.

The likes of 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Russell Hobbs, Noodle, and the incredibly talented artists and backup singers they have worked alongside were put on full display in a fantastic show. The audience never seemed to stop singing and dancing, thanks in part to the incredible high energy, live performance of the band’s co-creator, Damon Albarn.

Opening the night with their 2001 hit song “M1 A1,” followed by “Last Living Souls” from their Demon Days album, gave the audience a glimpse of the immersive experience they were here to enjoy. Other catchy tunes from their impressive, twenty-seven song long setlist included such favorites as “Rhinestone Eyes,” “Dirty Harry,” and “Feel Good Inc.”

It was truly a delight to see the concert hall filled with such a diverse group of people. Some who had known the band since their start in the nineties, and some who had just recently found out about this incredible work of art. Nevertheless, the energy in the room was excited and joyful, as fans of old and new came together to appreciate Gorillaz as they continue to bring a different look to the world of music. Their shows are undoubtedly not just concerts, they are experiences.

As the North America tour comes to an end after a few more stops, keep a look out for Gorillaz next tour and check them out. With a new album due out early next year, hopefully they’ll be hitting the road again soon to share their new, and old music in a way only Gorillaz can.
