A Symphony of Color: Chinese Lantern Festival Lights Up Franklin Square Once More
A true classic never goes out of style, the same seems to go for 2000-year festival traditions. Watching the ancient Chinese celebration marking the end of the lunar new year festivities take over Franklin Square Park every year is the highlight of my summer.

With every passing season the Chinese Lantern Festival enchants and delights with new glowing sights and themes. 2026’s display is particularly special with the addition of a brand-new look to the iconic gate and dragon that greet visitors. Beyond the glowing gate is a tunnel of twinkling lantern plants, twisting in an arch you could get lost in (and I did). A display honoring FIFA being hosted in Philly is celebrated in a tunnel and large soccer ball lanterns featuring flags of the visiting countries. Seeing this exciting event acknowledged by this monumental Philadelphia tradition feels like a perfect storm.

Furthering the incredible timing of other events, America’s 250th birthday too receives recognition in the festival. As one of the many interactive lantern displays, stationary bikes are used to activate fireworks displays. Neighboring is a monstrous replica of our very own Independence Hall!

As always, alongside the lanterns, guests will enjoy stage performances featuring incredible displays of acrobatics, juggling (in multiple forms!), and my personal favorite, mask-switching opera (also known as face-changing opera or bian lian). There is something indescribable about watching stage performances surrounded by the glow of lanterns.

Similarly magical is the fountain show happening surrounded by lantern swans, otters, and smoke bubbles. As always looking somewhere will show you something you haven’t seen yet, and displays will have plaques that will teach you something you don’t know yet. A dumpling workshop is now available. Teaching guests how to traditionally shape and cook delicious dumplings is a sure way to take home a new skill.
The food options at this year’s festival are a real treat. Alongside some local favorites like Chickie and Pete’s and Humpty’s Dumplings are some fresh faces worth discovering. Oishii is an Asian fusion offering food from an array of cultures sure to satisfy your cravings as you wander the park.

For your relaxing stroll through the park, Franklin Square is offering the yearly cocktail garden as well. Specialty drinks are on the menu for this event, so please enjoy responsibly! As always, the night ends the way I finish all of my visits to Franklin Square’s events… with a milkshake from the park’s resident food-stand, SquareBurger.
This year’s lantern festival is, as always, an event for everyone. Whatever draws you to this event is a gateway to an unforgettable celebration of tradition and arts. Come for the food, the fun, and the fantastic lanterns for a night to remember! I can’t wait to return to my favorite Franklin Square Festival again.
