The Jesus and Mary Chain & The Cobbs – Union Transfer – Philadelphia, PA – May 15, 2017

The Jesus and Mary Chain put on an alternative rock clinic last week at Union Transfer. With beams of light separating their visages from light and the pitch black, their work of the past and (finally) present meshed together to satisfy the adoring Philadelphia fans.

With their first new album since 1998 out in the world (Damage and Joy), the Reid brothers Jim and William led the crowd through a career-spanning set. Lead singer Jim Reid coyly retrieved and returned the microphone, revealing the inner workings of songs from the classic Psychocandy onwards. And though only a taste of the newest songs made it into the mix, they fit right in with The Jesus and Mary Chain oeuvre.

Philly’s own The Cobbs opened. With a solid rock sound that was an exciting opening taste, this band is working on their first record in around a decade.
